Unnatural smiles, cold, hard skin and scarlet eyes lifelessly pierce through the natural realm from which it came. Metal claws are now the painters, the workers, the citizens, the soldiers, the succession and replacement of man. And thus they see no need to preserve human existence. This is the persistent vision of humanity’s creation turning on us and rendering people obsolete. This vision is false, for Artificial Intelligence is not an enemy of destruction; it is an essential to our growth.
Technology is advancing and without a doubt AI is being implemented into society as seen with Alexa in our homes and Siri in our hands. Google’s driverless cars, autonomous tutors, and the world’s first robot citizen, Sophia, escalate the development of robotic engineering and it’s correlation to daily life.
But, such excellent feats also continue to build on top of people’s anxiety. 7 months ago, 72% of Americans were apprehensive of becoming inferior to these imitations in the workforce and dreading the lingering dangers they hold, according to the Guardian’s studies.
Author of the research, Aaron Smith expressed to the Guardian: “Ordinary Americans are very wary and concerned about the growing trend in automation and place a lot of value in human decision-making. They are not incredibly excited about machines taking over those responsibilities.”
However, the efficiency of AI robots’ decision making exceeds those of people. IBM’s Watson is considered more proficient in diagnostics than doctors since 2014. This is due to his statistical inferences and abilities to help neuro-scientists identify genetic links to diseases, such as ALS. And a doctor’s human touch is not necessarily the most trustworthy for overconfidence bias causes 44,000-98,000 deaths.
Yet, TV shows and movies, such as Westworld and Terminator, instigate people’s fears even further of a robot revolution wiping humanity out, which is just hysterical. AI will be the reason for humanity’s survival. Studies from FAO estimate that earth’s population will balloon 9.7 billion people by 2050, requiring 50% more crops. Yet, according to Chip-maker Intel, smart farm equipment will help farmers produce 70% more food by 2050.
The necessity for AI and its fruition can already be measured with Japan’s society. Japan’s workforce is shrinking due to 34 percent of their population’s age ranges above 60 years old and the production of children has decreased. Therefore, Japan requires the aid from robots to serve as hotel clerks, cleaning staff, and as companions and assistants to the elderly.
The use of AI robots doesn’t eliminate the elderly from the equation, but aids them in their operations through enhancements.
A 57-year-old employee expressed to CBS News' Adam Yamaguchi that: "When I didn't have this exoskeleton suit I used to have back pain and there was so much pressure on my legs," he said. "It was very difficult to do my job. But now with this technology, I hardly have any back pain anymore. I only need to exert half as much strength to do the job now.”
Without the use of AI robots, Japan would falter in a horrifying dilemma due to half of its population eventually succumbing to an incapability of working and not keeping their country afloat.
This does not mean autonomous machinery will not be taking up certain jobs, for it will attenuate the requirement for human personnel in the workforce. The ideal percentage is 10 percent, which is a significant 34 percent decrease from an Oxford 2013 study stated from UPI news. And though small, it does stand as a major concern in an increase in unemployment for the labor force.
Nevertheless, AI is not something that should be feared, but an item embraced as one of man’s greatest achievement.
Artificial intelligence is the intelligent way to go.
